Future of Hydrogen Powered Cars

President Bush announced in his 2005 State of the Union Address a $1.2 billion hydrogen fuel initiative to reverse America's growing dependence on foreign oil. This will be done by developing the technology for commercially viable hydrogen-powered fuel cells to power cars, hydrogen powered trucks, homes and businesses, without air pollution or negative greenhouse gases. By the year 2020 it will be cost-effective for large numbers of Americans to choose to use clean, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. This will improve America's energy security by reducing the need for imported oil, and help clean our air.

Consumers Unite demand Hydrogen Powered Cars Now!

There is only one thing standing between us and kicking the oil addiction that pollutes our air and our foreign policy: a grassroots consumer movement which demands it in driving Hydrogen Powered Cars.

Because women are the majority of consumers, women drivers are positioned well to lead this movement of getting Hydrogen Powered Cars. Because we're even more opposed to war-for-oil than men are-not to mention more conscious of environmental dangers and more vulnerable to the anti-woman, oil-rich patriarchies that stretch from Texas to the Middle East-we are also more motivated.

Conservation is useful, but there is the Big Solution we need to understand and demand: hydrogen. Foreign oil-as well as further oil exploration in this country-would become unnecessary if we switched to hydrogen now. It could fuel every car, truck, and bus now on the road, and every plane in the air-more every year, and completely within 20 years.

S. David Freeman, energy advisor to 3-U.S. Presidents and pioneer of the Hydrogen Now! movement, says, "We don't need to wait for the hydrogen fuel cell. The same internal combustion engine that American industry has spent more than 100 years perfecting can be retrofitted to run on hydrogen. Separated from water by electricity, hydrogen recombines with oxygen when it burns, thus becoming water again. it's the ideal fuel."

Even President Bush the Oilman, has been forced to say the words "hydrogen cars" but the problem is he's talking about the hydrogen fuel cell, an expensive detour requiring billions for research and precious metals to manufacture, and would only fuel cars other than the internal combustion ones we already have. (The plot thins....) The problem also is that he and his nuclear plant/fossil fuel friends would use the same old polluting sources to supply the electricity needed to separate hydrogen gas from water-instead of wind and solar plants that are practical and safer.

So accept no substitutes: Cleanly produced hydrogen fuel could be available from modules to serve thousands at existing gas stations-using electricity produced in solar- or wind-powered plants-and also from a module small enough to fit in your own garage, powered by electricity generated by a solar panel.

Retrofitting existing cars (including SUV's) would be possible for a few thousand dollars; a new hydrogen car would cost only about 5 percent more than a polluting gas-guzzler; this fuel would be the equivalent of about $2.50 a gallon; and a hydrogen-powered car would have a range of about 200 miles - numbers likely to get better with mass production. So talk down oil - and use as little as possible. Talk up hydrogen - and tell car makers that an end to the burning of fossil fuels is all you will support. P.S.
